My brother submitted a photo that my sister-in-law took and a little blurb he wrote about our trip to the NY Times Why We Travel: Readers' Photos section and we not only made it in but got selected as an Editor's Pick. Read it here or see below.
Tuscany and Umbria, Italy — This picture was taken by my wife, who has a much better eye than I do, on our vacation in Italy. We rented a villa in Umbria between the towns of Marsciano and San Venanzo. My father, his wife and my two girls, Maisie and India, ages 2 and 10 months respectively, are looking out over the valley from the shade of an olive tree in the front of the property. My father was recently diagnosed with an aggressive case of Melanoma on the top of his head. Fortunately, the surgery was a success and the doctors say my father is currently "cancer free". He has since been instructed to wear hats at all times. The rest of the family -- there were 11 of us on the trip, including three grandchildren -- took to wearing hats at all times, as well. Perhaps it was simply out of necessity to protect ourselves from the powerful Italian sun. But I prefer to think of our persistent hat wearing throughout Italy as a familial act of solidarity.
