Song On Repeat: "Cosmic Love"

To not write a "Song on Repeat" blog entry about this tune would almost be a crime considering I have been listening to it over and over again on my way to and from work on the subway for a few weeks now. Sadly (or maybe weirdly) this is not an exaggeration. It is not a new song, in fact I was listening to another Florence and the Machines song from the same album on repeat when I first went to Berlin almost exactly three years ago. They are just those kind of emotional, grab you by the heart, dreamy pop anthems that you have to listen to just.one.more.time.

On a side note: Is it a normal thing to listen to one song incessantly like I do? Or is it only a certain type of person that does that? If so, what type is that? I guess I just cant get enough of things I like.

Song on Repeat: "Somebody That I Used To Know"

I heard this Gotye song awhile ago and instantly loved it (they sound like the Police!) but it wasn't until today that I saw the video and really listened to the words. Now I love it even more and will listen to it on repeat for the rest of the day. Well at least until I go outside and enjoy the much needed New York sun. So good, right?

Song on Repeat: "King Rides By"

The woman I spent my younger years listening to in all her (and mine) melancholic glory is back. Meow. Well kind of. This track is a remix of Cat Power's 1996 song "Kings Ride By" with Filipino boxer and politician Manny Pacquiao mesmerizingly getting into it with a punching bag for the video. Giovanni Ribisi directed it, did you know he and Chan Marshall (AKA Cat Power) are going out? I didn't until today. I also found out she is working on a new album.

I'm mildly excited for that — but you know it is true, sadly, the older I get the less exciting new music is and the less likely it is to really change my life the way You Are Free did back in the day. But anyway, no need for any of that negativity. I really did love her, probably why it's the song on repeat for this grey wintery afternoon. I loved her for her beautiful raspy voice, depressing lyrics, classic cool girl grunge style and her insane onstage antics. Were you at the show where she hid behind the curtain for half of the concert or the one where she lip-synched rap songs the whole time to a booing audience? She is a nutter, or apparently was. Gotta love her for it though.

Song on Repeat: "You Know What I Mean"

Sometimes you can find home sickness remedies in the strangest of places. Mine came on Saturday in the form of putting on my new lipstick and listening to this song over and over again as I tried on clothes for the evening out. Superficial I know, but a simple solution. It's something I do at home, a little routine (not always with this song of course) that I haven't really done since I have been in England. Not that we haven't been going out (there has been far too much of that maybe), but it's just not the same getting ready process with a boy around. But Saturday it was just me and I was able to try on a bunch of outfits and blast this girly song over and over again as I danced around. It's also nice to rediscover a band.

Song on Repeat: "Video Games"

Does this girl really look like that? Sing like that? Write songs like that? Dress like that? Make videos like this? Wow, I am jealous or just excited to discover Lana del Rey and to play this song over and over again.

Thank SMTTY

Song on Repeat: "Someone Like You"

Alright, I have to stop listening to this song over and over again. I mean it is beautiful and all but this is getting seriously depressing...

Song on Repeat: "Young Blood"

One of my fondest memories ever (seen here and here) was driving over the Golden Gate bridge toward Marin County on an achingly beautiful late spring day with my brother Michael (who arrives in Berlin in an hour and a half. Yay!) and my friends Sunny and Zack in a mini-cooper convertible with the top down blasting MGMT "Kids."

This song by the New Zealand band The Naked and the Famous is that type of summer-anthem-create-some-memories-drive-with-the-top-down-jump-in-the-pool kind of tune and I have been playing it all day dancing around my house and hoping it will make the sun come out for my bro.

Morning Song, Morning Shoe

On my way to work this Santogold song from a couple years ago came on shuffle and now I can't stop listening to it. My music is usually so melancholy, so it is nice to listen to something lively, especially in the morning. Then I saw these Charlotte Olympia shoes and I can't stop staring. What do you think of them? I think I could definitely dance around to this song with some fruit on my feet.

Song on Repeat: "Marathon"

Wow, twice in one week: I have been listening to the song "Marathon" by the husband and wife duo Tennis all morning. It is a perfect little diddy for a sunny Saturday.

Speaking of tennis, aren't these matches awesome? Thanks for sharing A Cup of Jo.

Song on Repeat: "Undertow"

I haven't done a song on repeat post in sometime, probably because I haven't listened to a song over and over and over again for some time. Well that is until I started listening to the band Warpaint and then the song "Undertow" got the royal treatment. It is a tune just the way I like them: dreamy.

Song on Repeat: "Walk in the Park"

I listened to my favorite band from last year Beach House's new album "Teen Dream" in its entirety today and... I was impressed. They managed to produce an appropriately nostalgic and dreamy third record on the tail of "Devotion," their equally (if not more) amazing sophomore album. At first I thought there wasn't a particular song that I enjoyed more than the others — just the album as a whole — but then it popped out at me like a really gentle and slow slap in the face and I have been listening to "Walk in the Park" on repeat ever since.

Oh and we just bought tickets to see them in Berlin(!) at the end of the month.

Song on Repeat: "Me and Jane Doe"

Charlotte Gainsbourg's "Me and Jane Doe." Simple. Pretty. Catchy. Beck. I like it, na na na na na na oh na na na na na na.

Fuck Lady Gaga (Song on Repeat Nostalgia)

Fever Ray (Karin Elisabeth Dreijer Andersson's solo project while she is on hiatus from the Knife) blows Lady Gaga out of the water on every possible level. With her avant-garde costuming and acceptance speeches, but especially and more importantly with her music, it's just not even comparible. Oh man, and The Knife, they will always have a very special place in my heart. "Heartbeats" was my song on repeat for a few years of my life, blasting it over and over pretty much before every night out on the town.

Song on Repeat: "I think Ur a Conta"

According to the hipster cool code, I am not sure if I am "supposed" to like the new Vampire Weekend album. And to be honest I am not so sure if I do. But this one song "I think Ur a Contra" (even though using 'Ur' in the title makes me want to vomit) just gets me, hence me playing it over and over again.

Update: I like the song "Diplomat's Son" also far all it's Paul Simon Graceland goodness, but that is pretty much it.

Song on Repeat: "The Strangers"

Why do I love the line "I threw flowers in your face on my sister's wedding day" so much? "Paint the black hole blacker" is pretty damn good as well. I guess if I am not listening to psychedelic dreamy music it is a bittersweet girly hipster song that is making the rotation. Today was the latter and St. Vincent's "The Strangers" was having a go at it. With lines like that how could it not?

Song on Repeat: "Two Doves"

Been listening to the Dirty Projectors a lot lately and the song "Two Doves" is just so pretty pretty I can't stop listening to it. It's always a pleasant surprise when the 7th track on "Bitte Orca" begins to play — it stands out like it should be in some lovely little musical sung by Audrey Tautou in a flowing pink frock.

Song on Repeat: "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell"

Okay so I am a bit out of the loop here in Berlin—hence my blog turning into a family photo album. Not that this city is lacking in the cutting edge cool department, I have just fallen a bit off the radar. When it comes to knowing the new and the in these days, my finger is pretty far from the pulse. I am hoping to get back on my toes when I return to the States next month, but as for now I am going to continue and marinate in my oblivion.

Anyway I am completely rambling, so let me get to the point: a couple weeks ago I was listening to a Berlin radio station who's DJ has a thing for artists from Brooklyn when this ridiculous hip hop song came on that made my insides churn with laughter and my head actually bop to the beat. I assumed that this "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" diddy had been up in every bodies ears for some time now, but that was my first listen and let me tell you, I have never loved something so stupid. I think it is genius. And their name is Das Racist, not too bad either. So I did some research after and yes, everyone did fall for it a few months ago but my unoriginal and late self is still happily posting it today.

Song on Repeat: "The Dog Days are Over"

The song that I have been playing over and over again goes perfect with the pics I wanted to post of meine Deutschen hund freund (my German dog friend) Diva. She is a rottweiler doberman mix and Karsten is totally scared of her (even though you can't really tell in this pic). But she is actually a doll that would never hurt a thing, well unless you fuck with her of course. And the song is "The Dog Days are Over" by Florence + The Machine, and it's totally motivating me on one of the first dreary weather days I have had in Berlin. Maybe it's because Megan left this morning, more pics of her week here to come.

Song on Repeat: "House of Cards"

I still think this is the most beautiful song. The melancholy rainy day blues, bittersweet happiness and nostalgia balanced together with perfect fluidity. It takes a certain mood.

Song on Repeat: "Words of Love"

I have been listening to Jessica Lea Mayfield’s "Words of Love" all afternoon after a nice yoga class. I feel relaxed—she’s making me sway back and forth at my desk. Good thing no one is really here...and I have definitely been into words of love lately so it all makes sense...

Thanks AudioMuffin.
