Well Done Sam Mendes

Last night I had a movie date night and not only was it nice to relax after the crazy packed weekend we had, but I was also pleasantly surprised by the film Away We Go. I knew it was going to be a sweet indie hipster love story (which I do like) but never did I expect to find myself in such hysterics that I blushed with embarrassment over my lack of ability to stop laughing. Thank God for dark theaters. I guess I should have guessed it with SNL's Maya Rudolph and The Office's John Krasinski as the leads — who not only did an amazing job making me laugh but also at telling the darker side of the plot. Leave it to Dave Eggers, of course, to write a screenplay with the perfect mix of humor and seriousness.

Knowing it was written by him was my reason for wanting to see it, but it wasn't until the credits rolled that I realized it was directed by Sam Mendes. Kate Winslet's husband was also behind Revolutionary Road, another film I watched and loved recently. Although they both tackled a bit of the my-life-turned-out-different-than-I-thought-it-would theme, I had the complete opposite reaction to each. Instead of the uncontrollable laughter of Away We Go, Revolutionary Road caused a massive amount of uncontrollable tears, followed by a day of depression. Sounds bad I know, but if a movie has that much of an affect on me, I have to love it. So for obviously different reasons, I highly recommend both films.

A Beautiful Curveball

My friend Miss Diebel just told me that life throws me “beautiful curveballs.” I am not so sure she is right, I mean I really hope she is, but sometimes it feels more like curveballs to the face. But anyway, a month ago there was no way I would ever have imagined that I would be going on a 17 day European vacation this summer, or any amount of days for that matter. But today, my flight was booked into Berlin and out of Rome (thanks for the loan Mikey!) and I couldn’t be more shocked and excited. A week spent in Berlin living it up with my bro, then a few days exploring in Rome, and then a Tuscan Villa with almost my entire family, plus the new baby! God I can’t believe I just wrote a blog about not being accustomed to the finer things in life, I feel like a royal brat right about now. But maybe it is just a wonderfully beautiful curveball.

The Most Amazing Thing I've Ever Seen

This gave me chills and made my day over and over again, and it's not just because I love Les Miserables. This is magical, but for some reason the "embedding has been disabled by request" so you'll just have to click here to watch. Trust me it's worth it, it will make you believe. Amazing.

Michelle Obama is putting a vegetable garden in the White House backyard, and she is having DC elementary students help her do it. This makes me happy. Because local food and health education is key, but also because my dad always had a one wherever we lived and still does, well not in his NYC apt. Have you ever tasted a tomato right off the plant? It’s the most amazing thing ever.

The Obamas will feed their love of Mexican food with cilantro, tomatilloes and hot peppers. Lettuces will include red romaine, green oak leaf, butterhead, red leaf and galactic. There will be spinach, chard, collards and black kale. For desserts, there will be a patch of berries. And herbs will include some more unusual varieties, like anise hyssop and Thai basil. A White House carpenter who is a beekeeper will tend two hives for honey.

I got some disheartening but somewhat freeing bad news yesterday and for some reason ever since then I can’t stop listening to Paul Simon’s “Crazy Love, Vol. 2” over and over again.

Free Love Man

In high school I was a part of this program where instead of writing reports and taking tests about those necessary subjects, we wrote plays, put on performances and shot films to show what we’d learned. Oh to feel the free love of a teenager in hippie Marin. Maybe that’s what inspired me to convince my history teacher that Joan Baez was in fact a historical figure — no I just really wanted to wear flowers in my hair, a peasant blouse and bell-bottom jeans while carrying around my friend’s guitar when everybody else was dressed up as Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman.
